questions
1. DOORS - Check they are securely closed. Make sure that any
passengers have closed theirs. You are responsible for the safety of your
passengers. A door not properly shut may fly open as you drive along.
2. SEAT - Adjust it for comfortable use of foot controls and steering.
Push the pedal on the far left (clutch) down to the floor. You should be able
to do this without stretching.
3. STEERING - Adjust seating position for comfortable steering Don't get
too close or you may find it awkward to let the pedal up and you could knock
your knee on the steering wheel.
4. SEATBELTS - Ensure all seatbelts are on correctly. The law requires
that all passengers wear seatbelts where fitted, unless they have an exemption
certificate. It is the driver's responsibility that children under 14 have the
seat belt fastened.
5. MIRRORS - Adjust your mirrors. You should be able to see clearly in
the mirror with the minimum of head movement. When adjusting, hold the mirror
keeping your fingers off the glass. Adjust the door mirrors to reduce any
'blind spots'.
You are ready to switch on the engine,
but before you do you have to check that the handbrake is on and the gear lever
is in neutral.
Practice makes perfect, so get plenty
of practice.
Get ready to move - Take your first
look to the front and into the mirrors for traffic and pedestrians and then get
yourself ready to move.
Press the clutch down as far as it will
go.
Select first gear.
Set the gas (press the gas pedal
slightly and then hold it still). Press it to generate sufficient power to
move. Listen to the engine noise. Don't let the engine roar!
Bring the clutch up until the sound of
the engine drops slightly and then keep both feet still (this is called the
‘biting point’)
Check it's safe - Look in your interior
and door mirrors again and look round to check the blind spots (the areas you
are unable to see in the mirrors). Be prepared to wait if the coast is not
clear. Decide if you need to signal. The rule about signals in any circumstances
is that they should be given "to help other road users". If there is
not the slightest chance of any-one being affected by you moving off, including
oncoming traffic and pedestrians, there is no point in signalling. But if there
is any sign of life anywhere near you, why risk it? Have your hand on the
handbrake ready for release.
blind-spot Move away - It's safe. Let's
go. Are you 100 per cent sure? Check the blind spot again by looking over your
right shoulder and release the handbrake. The car
should slowly move forwards. If the car doesn't move, let the clutch up a
little more.
To increase your speed, press the gas
pedal gently and gently raise the clutch and take your foot away from the
clutch pedal. You will need to change into 2nd gear soon after moving away.
Now
you are on your way - Keep to the left, unless road signs or markings indicate
otherwise. The exceptions are when you want to overtake, turn right or pass
parked vehicles or pedestrians in the road
How to emerge LEFT from a junction.
using MSPSL
Mirrors Signal-Position Speed Look
Mirrors
Main mirror - be aware of any other
road users behind you who might move
left before you do.
Left mirror - be aware of any other
road users on your left/attempting to pass on your left.
Look forward to be aware of where your
junction is.
Signal
* The signal should be put on at a safe distance from the junction.
* If too early, other road users might think you are not going as far as
the junction.
* If too late, other road users will not be given sufficient warning.
* The signal does not always need to be applied immediately after
looking in your mirrors. Sometimes it will be necessary to delay the signal due
to a hazard on approach to your junction
Position
* For most junctions to the left you should be approximately one metre
out from the kerb and should follow the kerb as it bends to the end of the
road.
* For some 'sharp' junctions you will not need to steer left untill you
start to emerge.
* The position can vary depending on the junction type and any hazards
near/at the junction.
Speed
* For most junctions the speed should be reduced to a crawl as you reach
the end of the road.
* For some 'open' junctions (junctions where you can see the new road
clearly before you reach the end of your road) you could emerge at 10mph.
* The speed can vary depending on the junction type and any hazards
near/at the junction.
Look
" As you approach the end of the road look both right and
left to be aware of other road users on the new road.
* Just before you are about to emerge, use your left door
mirror to make sure of any other road users who might have positioned to pass
on your left.
* You MUST NOT emerge if
this would cause road users on the new road to slow or change direction.
* Mirrors as soon as you r in the new
road and before you increase speed check your interior mirror ( for vehicles
moving behind ) and your right door
mirror ( for vehicles that may be overtaking )
then increase your speed to a suitable speed for the road and road
conditions and keep within the speed limit
How
to emerge RIGHT from a junction. Think of
MSPSL
Mirrors
Signal-Position Speed Look.
* Mirrors
* Main mirror - be aware of any other road
users behind you who might move right before you do.
* Right mirror - be aware of any other
road users on your right/attempting to pass on your right.
* Look forward to be aware of where your
junction is.
* Signal
* The signal should be put on at a
safe distance from the junction.
* If too early, other road users
might think you are not going as far as the junction. * If too late, other road users will
not be given sufficient warning.
* The signal does not always need to
be applied immediately after looking in your mirrors. Sometimes it will be
necessary to delay the signal due to a hazard on approach to your junction
Position
* For most junctions to the right you
should be out towards the centreline (but not over it) just before you emerge.
* The position can vary depending on the
junction type and any hazards near/at the junction.
Speed
* For most junctions the speed should be
reduced to a crawl as you reach the end of the road.
* For some 'open' junctions (junctions
where you can see the new road clearly before you reach the end of your road)
you could emerge at 10mph.
Look
* As you approach the end of the road look
both right and left to be aware of other road users on the new road.
* Just before you are about to emerge, use
your right door mirror to make sure of any other road users who might have
positioned to pass on your right.
* You MUST NOT emerge if this would cause
road users on the new road to slow or change direction
Mirrors
as soon as you r in the new road and before you increase speed check
your interior mirror ( for vehicles moving behind ) and your right door mirror ( for vehicles that may be overtaking
) then increase your speed to a
suitable speed for the road and road conditions and keep within the speed limit
Before starting the manoeuvre, you will be parked at
the side of the road, then asked to execute the turn in the road.
1st
At
the start, look around as you would when moving off. If the road is clear or
there are no other road users nearby who are attempting to pass you, then move
off very slowly and immediately steer full lock right, but once you’re car is
moving give another look to the right for other road users.
If it is safe, continue across the road and if you
have enough space (and the full lock steering is complete) move a little
brisker but slowing down as you approach the kerb and stopping your car so that
the front of your car does not overhang the kerb but is approx 15cm short of
the kerb.
You can now hold the car using either your foot brake
or your parking brake, while you change into reverse gear.
2nd
Before
reversing look right along the road, left along the road, then out the rear
window. If the road is clear or there are no other road users nearby, move off
very slowly and immediately steer full lock left while still looking out the
back window, but once you’re car is moving give another look to the right for
other road users then out the back window again.
If it is safe, continue across the road and if you
have enough space (and the full lock steering is complete) move a little
brisker. When half way across the road, look over your right shoulder (or in
your right door mirror) so as to judge stopping with the rear of your car not
overhang the kerb but approx 6 inch short of the kerb.
You can now hold the car using either your foot brake
or your parking brake, while you change into 1st gear.
3rd
Before
moving off look left along the road then right along the road for other road
users.
If it is safe or there are no other road users nearby
who are attempting to pass you, then move off slowly and immediately steer
sufficiently to the right so as to end up on the left side of the road and
continue on your journey.
The turn in the road does not always need to be three
points. This is dependent on the width of the road, the vehicle used, etc.
Every time you are steering, keep the car very slow
but the steering brisk.
On busy roads make more frequent observations all
round for other road users. If, at any of the points, other road users are
nearby or are approaching so as to pass you then you must wait and allow them
to pass. Try to make eye contact with them If they wait, then you must continue with the manoeuvre.
At the 1st & 2nd pts you must go all the way
across to approx 15cm from the kerb. This will allow other road users to pass
by, if they want to, while you are changing gear and preparing to move again.
1..P O M (prepare observe move)
2..STOP 1m from parked car looking over
bonnet from side window.
3..P O M slect reverse
4..OBSERVATION
start looking over right shoulder finish looking over left.
5..Reverse in a straight line until the
rear wheel is in line with the rear corner of the parked car.
6..OBSERVATION
7..1 full turn left
8..When the corner of the parked car is
in line with left wing mirror 2 full turns right.
9..As
the car becomes straight 1 full turn left 10..STOP hand brake neutral.
Before starting the
maneuver, you will be parked at the side of the road before the junction. After
moving off safely to drive towards the start position, look in your main mirror
to see if there is a vehicle behind you. If there is, then immediately on
passing the centerline of the junction you are going to reverse into, indicate
left but continue into position. You should be approx 1 half meter out from the
kerb and approx 2 to 3 car lengths beyond the junction.
At start - Look right
blind spot, right mirror, ahead then out the back window. If it is safe, then
follow the kerb to the corner while still looking out the back window.
Note: If there are
vehicles traveling towards you (on the other side of the road) from the front
then make yourself aware of these vehicles as they might turn into the junction
you are attempting to reverse into. You can continue reversing but if they are
slowing down to turn into the junction then you should slow down and wait just
as they approach the junction. Once they have turned in, you can continue
reversing but before continuing look right blind spot, right mirror, ahead then
out the back window for any other road users that you might need to wait for.
At corner - Look
right blind spot, right mirror, ahead then out the back window. If it is safe,
then steer left to follow the corner into the junction while mainly looking out
the back window but now and then looking in your left door mirror to confirm
your position to the kerb.
Note: due to the
front of your vehicle moving out into the road when you start to steer you must
not continue if there are vehicles passing you or pedestrians walking around
your vehicle.
When parallel with
new road - Steer briskly right to straighten your front wheels, and then follow
the kerb back approx 5 car lengths.
Remember, you must be
mainly looking out the back window and only glancing in your left door mirror
every now and then to check your position with the kerb.
While on the corner
section, look right blind spot, right mirror, and ahead more often if required
e.g. a busy street, pedestrians nearby, other junctions nearby, etc. But again,
remember to be looking mainly out the back window while reversing.
At any time while
reversing, if another vehicle approaches from behind then you must wait when
they are nearby and until they pass you or turn away from you or wait for you
to continue. If, on the corner, a vehicle approaches close from behind then you
might have to pull forward into the main road to give them space to turn at the
junction, then once they are clear start reversing in again. Remember to do
your observations before pulling forward and before reversing again.
Show me tell me questions
for the driving test
Q1. Open the
bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how
you would check the engine has the correct level.
Identify the coolant
tank and check the min/max markings. If the coolant is below the min mark then
more coolant will need to be added. To do this, unscrew the cap and pour in
coolant until the max mark is reached.
Q2. Open the
bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would
check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.
Identify the brake fluid
reservoir and check the fluid level against the min/max levels.
Q3. Show
me/explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working
before starting a journey.
If the steering becomes heavy the steering may be
faulty. Before starting a journey two simple checks can be made. 1) Gentle
pressure on the steering wheel, maintained whilst the engine is started, should
result in slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. 2)
Turning the steering wheel after just moving off will give an immediate
indication that the power assisted steering is functioning correctly.
Q4.
Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car. (I
can assist you, if you need to switch the ignition on, please don't start the
engine).
Activate the brake pedal and
make use of reflections in garage doors etc to see if the brake lights come on
or ask someone to help.
Q5. Open the bonnet identify, where you would check the engine oil level
and tell me how you would check that the engine has enough oil.
Identify the dipstick, pull
it out and check the oil level against the min/max markings.
Q6. Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only).
Press the horn and listen
(turn on ignition if necessary).
Q7. Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this
car. (I can assist you, if you need to switch the ignition on, please don't
start the engine).
Operate brake pedal, make
use of reflections in windows, garage doors, etc, or ask someone to help. (may
need to switch ignition on, prompt not to start engine)
Q8. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before
starting a journey.
As you move off check the
brakes. They should not feel spongy and the car should not pull to one side.
Q9. Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are
working.
Turn on lights (turn
ignition if necessary),
Walk around car and check that the lights are on.
Q10. Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are
working correctly.
Activate the indicators or
hazard warning lights and walk around the car to see if all the indicators are
working correctly.
Q11. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended
tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.
Information will be found
using the car manufacturer's manual. Check the tyre pressures by using a
reliable pressure gauge when the tyres are cold. Don't forget the spare and
remember to refit the valve caps.
Q12. Tell me how
you would check the tyres to show that they have sufficient tread depth and
that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
A safe tyre will have no
cuts or bulges. The tread depth should be at least 1.6mm across the central
3/4s of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.
Q13. Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear.
Apply the parking brake.
When it is fully applied it should secure itself.
Q14. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted
so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
The head restraint should be
adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye
or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable.
N.B. Some restraints might not be adjustable.
Q15. Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen
washer and wipers .
Operate control to wash and
wipe windscreen (turn ignition on if necessary.
Q16. Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the
windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens.
Set all relevant controls
including; fan, temperature, air direction / source and heated screen to clear
windscreen and windows. Engine does not have to be started for this
demonstration.
Q17. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti
lock braking system.
Warning light should
illuminate if there is a fault with the anti lock braking system.
Q18. Show me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and
explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car.
Operate switch (with
ignition or engine on if necessary), check with main beam warning light.
Q19. Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you
would use it/them. (No need to exit vehicle).
Operate switch (turn on
dipped headlights and ignition if necessary). Check warning light is on.
Explain use.
Note: Failure on one or
both of the show me tell me questions will result in one minor fault.
